STTS launches new workshop for Microsoft Office users
|
Here at STTS we are really excited to announce the launch of our new IT Division. We are always looking for new ways to improve your efficiency and productivity, so we are kick-starting this new division with a fabulous new workshop called 'Microsoft Office Productivity Buffet'. This is a unique one-day workshop that takes you on an intensive, shortcut-filled Microsoft Office productivity journey.
Here's an interview with STTS's resident IT expert, Sharon Connolly (seen here in this photo with Shirley Taylor):
ST: We're all very excited about launching our first IT workshop. Why is this called 'Microsoft Office Productivity Buffet' – where does the 'buffet' concept come from?
Sharon: Well we know just how much Singaporeans love a buffet! We used the word 'buffet' because, just as you do on the hotel buffet, you'll pick up so many little tasty bits and pieces from different products. So this is both a sampler to our IT training, and a filling course as well.
ST: What's different about this workshop that people won't be able to get from any other IT courses?
Sharon: The blend of 4 subjects is different to anything you can get anywhere else. The training style is also very unique. Although I've been working in IT for over 20 years, I'm definitely not a 'techie'. I train other subjects as well, such as personal presentation and networking, so I'm a skilled trainer who can also teach IT, not just a babbling IT person with no people skills.
ST: I understand you have a similar background to me, in that you used to be a secretary. How has this helped you since you moved into training?
Sharon: Yes, I started my working life as a secretary, so I know the pressures and problems my students face. My training focuses on helping them to solve their work-based problems rather than just allowing them to tick off a list of subjects they know. As a trained image consultant, I also know how important it is to make everything that leaves your computer look good too, because you are representing your boss and your organisation with every communication.
ST: This all sounds really exciting, Sharon. I believe you also travel back to UK regularly to conduct IT workshops. What do you do there?
Sharon: Yes I go back to UK 3-4 times a year to look after the IT needs of some clients I've been working with for over 10 years. I teach all sorts of whizzy Excel solutions to a very smart young technical crowd at Amazon, and I also teach very computer-phobic older ladies at the British Heart Foundation, who refuse to have IT training by anyone else but me!

Are you a win-win negotiator?
|
To mark the launch of the latest book in the ST Training Solutions Success Skills series, author David Goldwich has written an article this month about how you can be a win-win negotiator. You can buy his book online now before it even hits the bookstores.
Most business people approach a negotiation hoping for a win-win agreement. But even with the best of intentions, they usually fall into the same win-lose patterns that characterise most negotiations.
What qualities do win-win negotiators possess? How are they able to consistently achieve win-win outcomes? If you cultivate some key qualities of win-win negotiators, you will improve your chances of negotiating win-win agreements. The seven key qualities are:
- Engage in mutual problem solving
- Share information
- Ask questions
- Listen empathetically
- Explain before disagreeing
- Persuade
- Think laterally
If you want to learn more about these seven key qualities, read the rest of David's article here.

Closing words

It was great to launch a new workshop in July. Karen Leong's workshop 'Professional People Skills' was very well received. Here she is (and me too!) with all the participants showing off their signatures, illustrating that we are all unique in our own special ways and it's up to each one of us to develop ourselves individually. Here's what some of the participants said about the workshop:
"There is always a new way of learning in ST Training Solutions. Very unexpected group exercises that just brings out the real part of all the participants."
"The trainer is cheerful and energetic. She shared a lot of valuable experiences."
That's all from me for this month. I'm taking a short break in August – heading back to Blighty for 3 weeks. Not been home for almost 5 years, so it will be a big trip! I'm looking forward to seeing all my UK friends again.
See you next month!
Shirley
